Fast forward to the present...
After Mike offers Sheridan a place to stay (with him of course), we begin to see and feel the magnetic attraction these two have to each other. The same one that both try to deny and fight for a large part of the book.
I found myself smiling a lot at the conversations that these two would have. The chemistry and sexual tension was dripping off the pages. After an awkward beginning these two develop a sort of routine and tolerance for the other all the while denying the crazy attraction they both feel. Little do they know that they are just what the other needs in order to truly heal and be happy.
Then after one night when Sheridan has one of her intense nightmares, Mike finally goes to her to offer support. This leads to a night of revelations about each others gut wrenchingly sad pasts and a deeper respect and understanding for each other and what they've been though. After bearing their soul to each other, Mike and Sheridan develop an amazing friendship that is filled with laughter, fun and trust. Not to mention a ton of sexual frustration! At this point its getting harder and harder for them to deny the pull that exists between them.
Once they finally give into temptation, there is a series of events that these two amazing characters must face in order to be together. If you are looking for an emotional read with a brooding male who happens to have a big heart, some witty banter and a happy ending...then this book is an absolute must!

My Review
This was my first Amber Nation novel and I'm happy to say that it won't be my last. I'm very much looking forward to reading the 1st and 2nd books in the Brown County series. I like that these novels can be read as stand alone and I didn't feel I had missed anything not having read the others. There are cameos by the other characters, but you never feel left out if you haven't read the others.
The book opens with such a intriguing prologue, we first meet Mike, a mechanic living in Brown County 4 years ago. He is clearly a doting father to his daughter Hannah, he also happens to take on the added roles of husband, mother and only bread winner, seeing as his wife Erin suffers from severe depression and doesn't seem to care about anything. By the end of the prologue I was hooked, I was totally wrapped up in this story and needed to find out what had happened to Mike the day a phone call changed his life.
Fast forward to the present...
Next we meet Sheridan, a young women who is escaping her own brand of shitty life to begin a new fuller life made by her and on her terms. Sheridan is trying to escape an abusive relationship that has left her with so much emotional damage and trauma that she isn't sure she can ever trust a man again.
While on the road to freedom she ends up in hospital at Brown County after an accident that leaves her hurt physically, stranded without a home, family or friends.

Enter Mike...the now single paramedic, who just so happen to be working the scene of her accident. Mike the now brooding cynical man with walls build around him that are nearly impenetrable.
The same man who seems to have an instant attraction and pull to Sheridan the towns temporary new addition.

“The name is Sheridan, not sweetheart. I’m not now, nor
will I ever be your sweetheart. Now, please do me a solid and point me in the
direction of my room for the night. I’ll be out of your way first thing in the
morning.” I may have looked strong on the outside, but on the inside I was shaking
like a flimsy leaf getting ready to be blown into the wind. I would never be
able to hold my own in a fight, it was too scary and intimidating. No wonder
why I always submitted to Pate... Stop thinking about him.
“Oh my God!” talk about a delayed reaction, you would think my
spidey senses would be on hyper alert after my past situations, but I felt so
safe with Mike. How could I be so stupid?
I’m sure I had
a horrified expression on my face, because Mike pushed himself off the counter
and began advancing on me.
“What’s wrong,
Sheridan? Is it your foot?” He genuinely sounded concerned, which was a
pleasant change from him being a pompous asshole.
“Well, my foot is aching, but I’ve dealt with much worse. I just
realized why you are being such a fucking douche to me!”
His brows
pierced together as if he were challenging me to confront him.
“You are going
to murder me in my sleep!” His jaw dropped open and he looked like he had a
million and one things to say, but it seemed as if I had stunned him
speechless. I continued on, placing a hand on my hip. “No, seriously, that’s
why you were so adamant about me coming with you.”
Finally, he
seemed to come unglued as he threw his head back and let out a barreling laugh
that came from deep within his gut.
Seeing him
release such a hearty belly laugh at my concern should have royally pissed me
off, but instead it did the complete opposite, it turned me on. A rush of
wetness flooded from my core, instantly soaking my panties.
It had been so
long since a man had invoked such a positive and sexual reaction from me.
I had to tamp
down my lust and remember that he was a cocky jerk and things would be just
dandy.
“You actually
think that I brought you here to kill you in your sleep? Chop you up into tiny
little pieces and shove you down my garbage disposal? You are delusional, maybe
your concussion is affecting you more than you initially thought.”
My hand was
still placed on my hip while my other was balled tightly into a fist and I
tapped my good foot mercilessly on the floor. He technically hadn’t answered me
and I wasn’t going to stand down until I was thoroughly convinced. His
explanation seemed a little too well thought out if it was just a spur of the
moment.
“That’s not the
reason I brought you here, Sheridan. And besides, my house doesn’t even have a
garbage disposal, which, therefore, makes my plan void.” He shrugged as if I
was the absurd one.
I relaxed just
a fraction, but that didn’t answer my question of why. “Then why did you
volunteer to bring me here?” I crossed my arms in front of my chest, which
showcased a white bandage taped on my forearm, covering the biggest abrasion
from the flying shards of glass.
He came a beat
closer, quickly closing in the bit of distance between us. I instinctively took
a step back, trying to widen that gap. I couldn’t risk him getting closer to
me, if I were to get a better whiff of his spicy scent, I would sure be a
goner, and I needed to stand my ground.
“Sweetheart, I
haven’t a clue, but when you’ve hatched another ridiculous theory, be sure to
fill me in.” He said in a low, cocky and condescending tone.
I really
thought he liked provoking me. He wanted to see fire, well he was about to get
a taste of his own rudeness and go up in flames.

I currently reside in Southern Indiana with my husband and two daughters. I spent most of my life trying to get out of Indiana, then spent four years trying to get back in, once my husband enlisted in the US Army and we were stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.
I am a stay at home mom and wouldn’t have it any other way. Even though most of my time is spent transporting my girls to their various sports activities or running them back and forth to school, it is a blessing just to be with them each and every day.
I am a concert and road trip junkie! I love the thrill of seeing my favorite bands live, and just having fun on the open road.
My kindle has become like an extra appendage, as it is never far from my side. I became obsessed with books a little more than a year and a half ago and wished I had gotten into them much sooner!! My love of reading is what sparked my passion for writing, and now it’s one of my favorite things that I do for myself.
