This is War, Baby by K. Webster
Publication Date: February 29, 2016
Genres: Contemporary, Dark Romance

This is War Baby FRONT ONLY

My life had a plan. Until he invaded it and stole it all away. My captor took me and I became a pawn. His strategy changed and he sent me away to WAR, because money is everything in this world. In my WAR, though, I found peace. I couldn’t help but find love where I least expected it, with a man who lived a battle every day of his life …all inside his head. But then my captor came back for me. Yet, this time, battle lines had been drawn and I was protected. So we thought. Even though my WAR was raging, my captor would fight to the death. The good guys always win, right? Not always. All’s fair in love and WAR, right? Not this time.

Warning: This is War, Baby is a dark romance. A really dark one. So dark you’re going to wish you had a flashlight to see yourself to the end and someone to hold your hand. Human trafficking, dubious consent, and strong sexual themes that could trigger emotional distress are found in this story. This story is NOT for everyone.

My Review

Holy Moly, K. Webster. Speechless.

This was superb. Unique. Dark but interspersed with giggles, passion and so much sweet.

This review is going to be sparse on details because it's one that needs to be allowed to play out. I was shocked over and over again as I read this dark yet delicious tale. While the warning is there for a reason, the story is not all doom and gloom. And just when I thought I knew where the story was going, jaw dropping twists showed me that I definitely didn't.

Baylee was a seventeen year old high school student with a doting boyfriend and parents when the unimaginable happens. Her captor takes her and exploits her. Just when she thinks her life is all but over, WAR comes and shows her that maybe all isn't lost. He has his own issues that seem insurmountable, and even though WAR and Baylee have a battle on their hands, together they fight for PEACE.

All I can say is to be ready for anything. Throw out all your preconceived notions. K. Webster has penned a tortured tale and yet made me fall in love when I least expected it. Also be prepared to get all sorts of hot and bothered because this story was beyond sexy (even when it should have been uncomfortable and I should probably admit that it makes me question my sanity at times). The story was perfectly paced and all necessary details were released at exactly the write time. It was one of the most engaging stories I've read this year and I'm on pins and needles for more.

Into Temptation

Synopsis

"Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”"

I'm not a good Catholic girl.

A good Catholic girl would never use church on Sunday to perve on the Father's son.

A good Catholic girl would never pulse between her thighs and lose her breath over the boy who recites the closing prayer - even if his voice is low and sinful enough to make her toes curl in her shoes.

A good Catholic girl would never allow herself to be lead into temptation by dirty, blond hair and dark eyes...

And a good Catholic girl would never use bible study as an excuse to be used and abused.

But, like I said, I'm not a good Catholic girl...

And he's FAR from a good Catholic boy.

Caleb Andrews is everything I don't need, but he's everything I want...

God help me.

Review

To say I was excited for this release from Skyla was an understatement.

What do you get when you cross a good catholic girl with a good catholic boy?

…Well if you are wondering you will have to look elsewhere because Cassia and Caleb are anything but ‘good catholic children’. This book is filled with forbidden attraction at its finest.

Caleb is a dirty son of a priest who sets his sights on a girl who desperately wants to be the ‘good Catholic girl’ that her parents want her to be. But the trouble is, she is anything but. She has unholy desires that are looked at as forbidden. She has wants and needs that seem to only be able to be satisfied by the one boy who is expected to follow in his father’s footsteps someday.

An oath that he has never had the intentions of keeping.

Caleb’s relationship with his father is strained after a tragedy hit has family and leaving Caleb with a heart unable to feel any real emotion. Caleb plays along with who his father wants him to be, and to most he seems like nothing but the good Catholic son his father vows he is.

But the daughters of Paradise Valley know different.

Cassia’s parents will do anything keep their daughter as pure as the day she was born. Well as close as they can after the ‘mistakes’ she has made. Cassia feels this overwhelming need to satisfy her parents’ wishes and be the daughter they so desperately want.

…until Caleb.

Cassia and Caleb are explosive together. Their romance is steamy and sexy and flirty right from the start. Their interactions will cause heat to rise to your face and anticipation to flow through you veins. Caleb’s dirty mouth has Cassia second guessing her dedication to being who her parents want her to be. As much as she tells herself she should stay away from him, she just can’t.

This has to be one of the best forbidden romance stories I’ve read in a very long time. I’ve become kind of a skimmer of dirty scenes but in this book – I think I swallowed my tongue a few times, especially with their first time together. The sex is off the charts hot, the risks they take, the mistakes they make and the feelings they start to feel will all leave you flipping pages until the very end.

What Cassia and Caleb share is more than a forbidden romance, it’s a bond that heals and sets the soul on fire. It’s a joining of two people that are so desperately looking for that other person who they can count on, rely on, and trust in. What they share…is magic!

*** Review Tour & Giveaway *** Black Widow by Lauren Runow

Please join us in celebrating the release of BLACK WIDOW by Lauren Runow!

Title: BLACK WIDOW
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Dark Romantic Suspense
Cover Designer: Lauren Runow
Release Date: February 23, 2016

Book Description

Preston

My wife’s dead. She killed herself right in front of me and it’s all my fault. My main goal now is to not mix my sexual needs with my emotional needs. Those are damaged forever. I bury my pain in a sex club that provides me an anonymous release. This way I never emotionally cheat on my wife. She was my forever. This is my right now.

Kamii

You name it I’ve read it. I love my erotic novels. After my husband was murdered, this is the only excitement I get out of my lonely, pathetic, workaholic life. That is, until I met Becca with her invitation to join her for one of my wildest book fantasies. Now I can be whoever I want to be, where no one knows my past and will never be my future.

My Review

Black Widow is a erotica reader's dream. If the blurb didn't hook you, the sex surely will. While Lauren's debut duet was indeed sexy, Black Widow had some of the best written erotic scenes I've read in while. Add in the suspense of figuring out where the story was going and the blossoming love story between two broken people and I was in sexy book heaven.

Preston watched his wife commit suicide right in front of him. He couldn't help her and since it was his actions that led to her death, he's determined to keep his heart free from any other entanglements since it will always belong to his beloved wife. But after creating a sex club based on his needs-no names, no faces, no connections beyond inhibited sex-he finds himself drawn to the newest member and can't get her out of his head.

Kamii is plain Jane who's given up on trying to win the heart of a man after losing her husband, and is just settling for being partner at her law firm. But when she meets Becca while reading/exercising at her local gym, they strike up a friendship that leads to Becca opening up her eyes to new and exciting possibilities. Becca is part of Preston's new sex club and when Kamii steps foot into this new world, she finds that maybe her life doesn't need to be the lifeless one she's been leading.

In the safety of the unknown, Kamii starts opening herself up in more ways than one and when one mysterious man at the sex club gains her attention she has to fight the connection that seems to get stronger by the minute. While Kamii starts to experiment, Preston finds himself unable to let her go. But when the unthinkable happens, Kamii and Preston have to work together to find the truth and they have to decide if living in the past is how they really want to spend their future.

I'm gonna be honest and admit that I reread certain sexy scenes more than once. They were scorching hot. I loved that each one was different and only got hotter as they progressed. I also loved that Kamii is the one that got to experiment and really grow while Preston was sort of on the sidelines. This isn't to say he wasn't involved; I just loved that we get to see the heroine really take what she wanted. I also need to admit that I'm currently taking applications for best friends like Becca. She was fabulous and the perfect balance for Kamii. Together these three (and in certain instances adding a few extras) kept the heat turned up and me turned on.

The love story between Kamii and Preston also developed so that I could feel their feelings start to grow. While at first I didn't quite understand Preston's motivations, as I learned more about him, his choices started to make more sense. Then the twist hit and I was blown away. I didn't expect it at all. I spent the majority of the second half of the book wracking my brain for answers. I eventually figured it out and loved the surprise even if some parts were a bit unlikely. In the end Preston and Kamii's story came full circle and I was left with a huge smile on my face and new panties.

Excerpt

After spending two hours outdoors getting my headshots taken by Finn, I slide into the backseat of the Uber with Finn, grateful to be back inside. He puts an arm around my shoulders and draws me to him. “Cold?”

I should pull away. Once I have it, though, his warmth is impossible to reject and feels as necessary as breathing. “A little.”

He squeezes me closer. Moves his hand up and down my bicep. “You’re shivering.”

The driver looks at us in the rearview mirror. “You guys are a cute couple.”

“Thanks,” I say.

Finn arches an eyebrow, pleased—because she thinks we’re together, or because I didn’t correct her? I don’t even want to correct her. I’ve missed the look she’s giving us, the one a woman makes when she’s more envious than jealous. I get it all the time with Nathan. That feeling, coupled with the heater blasting from the front seat, leaves me slightly woozy.

We’re just like actors in a movie, I tell myself. This isn’t real. It doesn’t count. After a few minutes, the urgency to get warm lessens, and the door opens to another less pressing, but still basic need. Because that’s how my arousal feels—essential. The more it’s ignored, the fiercer it grows. I snuggle into his side. All it takes is his hand on my upper thigh to invite an assault of graphic fantasies. Finn shoving me down on the backseat because he can’t control himself anymore. Thrusting his fingers under the hem of my dress to find me ready for him. The lower half of my body aches with sudden demands.

“Some of those photos we just took were for me,” he whispers in my ear. He couldn’t have chosen a worse moment to tease me. My legs are jelly-like. “Does that make you mad?”

I check to see if the driver is paying attention. She must know I’m married. How can something so vital and concrete in my life be hidden? “What if I say yes?” I ask.

“I’ll delete them. If you’re sure it doesn’t . . . turn you on.”

I try not to pant. “Why would it?”

“Imagining me looking at them later.”

I turn my head. Our mouths are a breath apart. One more inch, and they’ll touch. Again. Those lips are the color of sunburnt rock but whisper soft. We’ve done it once. Would one more kiss hurt? I can’t stop the image of him looking at me, my exposed, white throat on his computer, his cock in a firm fist. It should disgust me. It makes my panties damp instead.

“No response necessary,” he says as the car pulls up to the curb. “I can read it on your face.”

My Review

J.M. Darhower penned the perfect ending for the Monster in His Eyes series. I giggled, panted, cringed, and loved right along with Naz and Karissa. These two have had quite the journey and it ended with the perfect bang.

Now that Naz and Karissa are married and Naz is trying to turn over a new leaf for Karissa's sake, everything is sunshine and roses-or not. Once you're in the life, the life rarely lets you go which Naz always knew. But for Karissa he'll do whatever he can to make sure she has the life he wants for her. Karissa is at a point in her relationship with Naz that she knows when to ask questions and when to keep her mouth shut. Seeing these peculiar changes in Naz, Karissa can hardly believe this is the guy she first fell in love with but she's always known he's had two sides to him and he isn't the bad guy he proclaims to be-at least not really.

As Karissa sets out to finish university, Naz sets out to find out who is after him. It's obvious to him the someone is out to get him and Naz is determined to make sure that whomever it is gets nowhere close to his wife even if that means going back to the guy he used to be.

Told in alternating points of view, Naz and Karissa tell their continuing story. It follows them as they have to decide what they can truly live with and live without. Getting to see a softer and, I can't believe I even get to say this, silly side to Naz was the cherry on top of an already delicious story. Sure Naz is still possessive and can be a bit controlling, but in Target, it's obvious to see that he's growing and has perfectly valid reasons for every single thing he does. Karissa has also grown into her own. She's stronger and more determined and makes a perfect counterpart to Naz.

J.M. Darhower writes a wonderfully balanced mafia stories. Her characters are strong and relatable. Even in the face of the craziest situations, you can't help but feel compassion and understanding. Naz and Karissa's story is one I fell in love with in book one and book 3 has only cemented them as one of my favorite book couples. J.M. please never stop writing.

Excerpt

I was about twenty minutes early for my shift, but I got up to the bar, grabbed a rag, started wiping it down, bussing some dishes.

"Damn, Luke," Jake said, watching me work. "You win the lotto or something? Royals win the pennant last night and I forgot to watch?"

"I'm just in a good mood, that's all," I said.

I thought about it a moment longer, decided I should tell him more. Impart some wisdom learned from my not-particularly-advanced years.

"When everything's dark for so damn long and your eyes get used to it," I said, "just a little glimmer of sunshine lights up the whole world."

He nodded, then grabbed a bus bin and headed back into the kitchen.

Warren though, Warren wasn't impressed. He was sitting by one of the daytime barflies, but he'd stopped talking and was just watching me. I was on thin ice, and I knew it. I couldn’t afford to lose my job. A heartbroken, drunk, angry widower is probably as unemployable as the average ex-con.

I came on at the end of the day shift. Warren liked tending bar during the day, because it meant just shooting the shit with the regulars. That day I had a smile for every customer, sparse words of wisdom like day drunks want to hear. Tending bar wasn't my dream. But to hell with letting that make me lazy. I kept the place clean, I poured drinks like I cared.

I was getting into the swing of it when happy hour kicked in and a few more people filtered through the door. Couple of middle-aged bikers, a retired couple that parked their RV out front.

The door swung open again, letting in a little bit of that early-evening cold, and I glanced up to see a crowd of three women, with two men. One of the women was a reddish blonde, radiant. Sort of stole the light out of the room. It was Rae. Our eyes met and her smile gave the room back its light.

She'd been in jeans at the shelter, but she was in a blue dress now and she looked damn fine in either. Took my mind right off Maggie, faster than I thought it would be possible. I met her eyes, and she gave out a little gasp and giggle. I was probably smiling in surprise myself.

The crowd came over to the bar. I'd thought the other four were two couples, but I realized pretty quick that the black girl with the afro was dating the quiet white guy in a beard and glasses and tattoos, and that the other guy was trying to impress Rae. He had a John Deere hat, but his clothes were way too clean for me to buy it that he worked on a farm. I hated him, right off. I probably would have hated him if he was the best guy in the world, though. The other girl, she was tall, latina, and for some indiscernible reason was interested in the poser farmer.

Most of the time, I'm awful at reading people. But for some reason, at work I can tell you everything about everyone who walks in the door. About who's into who, about who had a bad day at work. Who wants to get drunk and miserable, who wants to get drunk and happy, who wants to get drunk and start trouble. Maybe it's some magic of the job, maybe it's just how people carry themselves at a bar. Helps with tips, that's for certain. You wingman right, and the money flows in.

Warren, he likes to upsell them drinks when he's doing that. Get them excited about the top shelf. Not me.

"Hey, Rae," I said.

"Luke," she said.

John Deere looked at me like I was the scum of the earth. And maybe I was, but if I was the scum then he was... I don't know, something worse than scum. Wannabe scum.

She introduced me to her friends. Nicole had the afro, her boyfriend was Eric. The girl with bad taste was Irina, and John Deere had some name but honestly it went in one ear and out the other. He was John Deere to me. Yeah, maybe I'm an asshole.

"So, how do you know this guy?" Deere asked, tossing me a look that said I clearly wasn’t good enough to be friend with someone like Rae.

"Oh, he came in just the other day. Adopted the sweetest dog, a bloodhound." She turned to me, flashing that dimple high on her cheek. "How is he? You guys call a truce yet?"

"King's great," I said. "I mean, he's probably at home right now, eating everything I've ever owned, but I figure I was due for a purge anyway, right?"

It was a lame attempt at humor, but Rae laughed.

"What can I get you all? Friend of Rae's is a friend of mine."
