Synopsis

My name was Dr. Erica Hill. I was a victim, then a witness, and then I ceased to exist altogether.

I may still be breathing, but stripped of my identity, I have long since stopped living. I am invisible, and my life depends on my ability to stay in the shadows.

But he sees me.

Slate Andrews is the embodiment of everything I have been taught to avoid. He’s rich and famous, and one image of him with a woman would earn millions for any paparazzi lucky enough to snap it. He has vowed to protect me with his life, yet he exposes me with his every breath. I should be stronger and walk away. I should disappear. But I’m terrified he would come after me.

I’m on the run, determined not to take him down with me but absolutely unable to let him go.

My name is Riley Peterson…at least for today.

My Review

Wow this was a bit different than anything I’ve read by Aly Martinez in the past. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors with her descriptive emotion and heartfelt storylines. Oh, and she is really really good at writing super hot sex scenes that aren’t over the top or overdone. ;)

Among the Echoes follows Riley Peterson “Aka…Erica Hill” after a horrific and gut-wrenching tragedy. She has had to let go of everything that was “Erica Hill” and now she is just a lost soul doing what she has to do to survive day by day. The only person in her life is the one man that has a direct link to that horrific day. He has become everything to her and the same goes for him. Together they are an unbreakable bundle of love, support and friendship. He will do whatever it takes to protect and keep her safe no matter the consequences.

Slate Andrews is a famous Boxer who’s life is surrounded by people just aching to get a touch or a glimpse of him…and he hates it. He hates the stardom, hates the frenzy people cause over his everyday life. Once a match is done he likes to retreat to the one place that grounds him and reminds him of who he really is. He goes for peace and doesn’t want to be bothered by anyone.

I would never hurt her, but I wouldn’t mind making her come a time or twelve.
Yeah, that absolutely makes me an asshole, but I’m still ok with that.

Then he meets is timid little neighbor who evokes something in him he hasn’t felt before. For the first time in as long as he can remember, he welcomes her touch. He wants to get to know her and not just because she seems like a broken girl that needs fixing.

I flinch when she traces them down my sides. I an’t take it anymore. Her touch is overloading my senses. I can’t focus on anything but how fucking good the tips of her fingers feel as she drags them over every inch of my chest and stomach.

"You’re killing me, Riley.”

Its been years since Riley has opened up to anyone new. She keeps mostly to herself. It’s the only way to ensure she and others stay safe. Until she meets Slate Andrews. For the first time in years she feels something that she has been missing. She feels like Erica again. He brings out the woman who has been missing, that has been replaced by a panicky and fearful shell of herself. But no matter how he makes her feel, she knows he is everything that she needs to stay away from and that terrifies her even more.

“Don’t do this. Don’t let this go because of who I am!”
I shout at the closed door.

“I’m not. I’m letting git go because of who I am,”

she says in a voice so broken that it physically hurts to hear it.

To some she may seem weak but to me she was strong. Riley had been through something traumatic and even though Riley may have had a lot of weak (I’d like to say protective) qualities…her true self, Erica, was a very strong and capable woman.

Ok so on to the swoony part of my review. Holy shit! Slate “freaking” Andrews. Amazing character. He is everything you want in a leading male. He is so strong yet gentle, fearless but cautious, and protective but still smart. His connection to Riley is remarkable, the way he comforts her and is patient with her is just beautiful. He never pushes her. He isn’t all alpha and super bossy towards her. He lets her work things out on her own. He gives her the space she needs but pushes her to break thru her fears. He is just perfect for her.

The story of Slate and Riley is amazing but the story of Riley and Leo is just as much. Their bond/friendship is incredible and you can just feel that no matter what, those two would do absolutely anything for one another.

My only complaint was I felt like the story ended pretty fast. I would have loved to see a little more of the details towards the end but all in all it was still a remarkable storyline.

If you have loved Aly’s previous books then I would highly suggest you give Among The Echoes a chance. It is an unforgettable read. If you haven’t read Aly’s work before then I would still suggest you read this along with her previous two books hahaha. They are all must reads on my list.
