My Review
Well its time to get the box of tissues out again…Chasing
Stars is a story of perseverance, survival, friendship and love. Miss.Rivera
has written a very beautiful story about Mackenzie and Hayes who start a
friendship that no one expected and the fell in love to create a beautiful
story that is full of triumphs and heartache. I loved the writing style for
this book, every chapter is either told from Mackenzie’s point of view Hayes’s
point, and it made the story so much more being able to be in the minds of both
of these amazing characters.
Mackenzie is 17 years old and living a life of poverty and
abuse. She is starting her senior year of high school at yet another new
school, in another new town. Her father is an abusive alcoholic that can’t hold
a job down and her mother is a passive observer. Mackenzie is subjected to
regular beating at the hands of her father and is just counting down the days
to graduation and freedom. She plans on going to college and never looking back
at her worthless parents.
Her first day of school however brings her face to face the
sexiest guy she has ever seen. At first she feels that he is way out of her
league, after all she the poor girl who lives in the trailer park and has a
drunk for a father. But she can’t seem to get the green eyed, brown perfectly
messy haired guy known as Hayes. And then to her surprise they end up being
chemistry partners of all things.
Hayes is your typical hotshot jock that goes through girls
like most of us do underwear. He never promises them more than sex but that
doesn’t stop pretty much every girl from trying to settle him down or being his
next conquest. But the moment he lays eyes on Mackenzie something in him
shifts. He doesn’t want to just sleep with her and be done with her, he wants
to spend time with her and get to know her.
Together of the bonding of star gazing a true friendship in
born, but the feelings aren’t only friendly between the two of them they both
have deeper feelings for each other but Mackenzie feels that she can’t be with
Hayes because he has made it clear that he is not boyfriend material. Hayes
however figures after Mackenzie starts dating another guy that he is permanently
friend zoned.
But one night it all comes to a head and they declare their
love for each other. They fall deeper in love with each other but their
relationship can’t get discovered by the outside world because Hayes’s dad is a
local judge and with Mackenzie’s dad less than stellar history it could hurt
his chance for re-election.
But after a homecoming miscommunication it all comes out.
But that doesn’t stop the love they share. What finally does it is the night Mackenzie’s
dad beats her again and Hayes’s dad calls the authorities. Mackenzie is sent away
with a secret that she hasn’t got to tell Hayes yet and Hayes is left broken
hearted not knowing if he will see her again.
Now here is where my review gets tricky..lol they do meet up
again over a year later and Mackenzie’s secret comes out. The real question is can
Mackenzie really accept that Hayes really did love her and that he still does
or will she let her past dictate her happily ever after?
I loved this book and highly recommend it. It’s not and
overly hot and steamy read but it will defiantly leave you with a smile and
some tear stained tissues.
