Synopsis
Love, betrayal and murder in a small town….
Twelve years after her mother's murder, Shannon Bradford fears she may have helped convict an innocent man. Even worse, her prominent family may have had something to do with it. Desperate for answers, she seeks help from the one person least likely to give it. Her best friend and childhood crush, Trace Dawson. The man she sent to prison.
Serving hard time for murder has left Trace angry and bitter. As far as he's concerned, digging into the past won't replace the years he's lost or erase the hell he's lived. Now that he's free, Shannon Bradford tops his list of bad memories. But he never counted on falling in love.
Set in a sleepy little town during the dead of winter, this award-winning romance novel is a tale of one woman's quest for truth and a man's struggle to forgive.
"MEMORIES flooded my mind, of the quiet riot he was, of the secret crush I’d had on him, and the extraordinary friendship we’d shared so many years ago. As fast as those images came, others replaced them. I was thrust back to the crime scene, back to Mother’s corpse and the shirtless eighteen-year-old roaring obscenities while Sheriff Gray and a deputy dragged him away in handcuffs." -- Within Temptation
My Review
WOW this is a debut novel by author Tanya Holmes, I found the writing attention grabbing, beautiful and poetic at times.
"When I moaned, he fisted my hair, his powerful hips never missing a beat, until the inner tightening began, until the world burned away and shattered beneath him, crying out his name."
So Trace has been in prison for 12 years, he's just been released and he runs into Shannon. Shannon helped convict him 12 years ago for killing her mother. But now all grown up Shannon fears that Trace was an innocent man.
"The world was closing in on me, just as it had twelve years ago... when Shannon Bradford accused me of murder."
This review will be short and sweet, it's a suspense so each step you take with the characters is a step to figuring out who the real killer is and I don't want to take anything away from the journey you go on with Trace and Shannon.
Trace comes back home after getting out of prison and is met with a town who calls him the Butcher Boy, he is shunned and anyone helping him is given a hard time.
"His was a name synonymous with death. A name fightened children whispered swapping campfire stories. His legend still haunted Willow's Corner and Temptation, West Virgina - New Dyer too for that matter."
There is a lot going on in this book but it's set out perfectly, your on a ride and it's taking you each step further and further and your slowly uncovering the clues along with Trace and Shannon, as well as reading about them falling or realizing they fell for each other a long time ago. Shannon was only 13 when Trace 18 went to prison for her mothers death, she has some memories return that she didn't even know were missing. She's confused and when she turns to her family for help they just tell her to drop it and to let it go, but Shannon can't, Trace was the one special person in her life when she was younger that she could turn to, what if she sent him to jail and he was innocent. So Shannon fights her way through this book figuring out who, what and when happened all those years ago.
Shannon's mother was known as the woman who had many lovers, boy toys, everyone thought Shannon would turn out the same way, so Shannon fought hard to prove everyone wrong.

"Rising above Mother's salacious reputation proved quite the challenge. Talk had even followed me to college. It added up to a womb-to-tomb legacy of degradation, and Trace's return had resurrected it."
Trace and Shannon band together to figure out who really killed her mother and why her family has so many secrets and lies. Trace and Shannon slowly starting getting closer and closer, but Shannon has a fiance so she holds back, even though it's clear she still loves Trace, the one who was always there for her.
"I rested my forehead against hers. I was holding the most beautiful woman in the world."
If you love a romance story filled with twists and turns and wonderful writing with great secondary characters you will love Within Temptation.
I'm looking forward to what Tanya Holmes has in store for the next book, which is Trace's brother Cole.
This is my favorite quote in the book, the helplessness and desperation behind it just had my heart hurting so bad for Trace.

"If you steal a man's dreams, destroy his livelihood, attack his friends and family - then prevent him from protecting the weakest of them, what's he got left?" I paused and lifted a brow. "Hope. That's what." Sidling closer, I narrow my eyes. "But what happens when you take hope away?" I tilted my head. "I'd say that man is now a dangerous foe. "Cause he's got nothin' left to lose."
