My Review

This is the second book in the series. You most definitely have to read the first, The Billionaire Banker, in order to understand and enjoy the story.

Forty 2 Days starts off one year after The Billionaire Banker ends. I was a little disappointed at that. I would have loved to see it play out how Blake reacted to her leaving. We get little pieces of it but I think that it would have been a highlight of this series since Blake is always so closed off and Lana leaving obviously had a profound effect on him.

When Lana has returns home she is not alone. She has Billie, and now…her son. A son she was never meant to have if certain people found out the truth about him. She loves him more than anything and will do everything in her power to protect him, even if that means not acknowledging him as her own.

As we know, Blake is a powerful man, so as soon as Lana applies for a business loan, Blake finds out about it. And when she goes into the meeting, Blake is there, just waiting for her and he is not happy. First, she made him fall in love with her and then she just left him lying in a hospital bed after he risked his life for her. He is angry, beyond angry, and he wants to make her pay. The only woman to ever have solen his heart he once described as innocent and pure he now describes as ‘cream and sugar and venom’.

“The real test of love is not being willing to kill for someone, but being able to give up your own life for them.”

Her betrayal hit him hard and the best way to make her pay is to make her finish out the portion of “the contract” that she backed out on…. 42 days. She owes him that time and as messed up at this situation is, she wants to do it but this Blake is different. This isn’t the same Blake that she left. He is colder and harsher, and his eyes are even more vacant than they were before, if that is even possible.

He is out for revenge. He wants to humiliate her, make her feel like the whore he thinks she is. He is cruel and punishing but deep down he still loves her and it kills him for the things he is doing to her.

“Are you re-creating everything so you can destroy it, Blake?”

“No.”

“What do you want?”

"I thought I knew, but I don’t anymore,” he confesses honestly.

“What did you want?”
“Revenge…”

I did enjoy this book but it almost felt as if I was reading the first book all over again. Blake pretty much sets up to recreate everything they did in the first book. In a way I can see why it is written that way—to show the subtle changes in the way Blake acted…sometimes showing his hatefulness and darker side and sometimes showing his appreciation for her and him putting more of an effort into their ‘relationship’.

I begin to cry. Not for the loss of Jack because I will never lose Jack, but for the loss of Blake, because I know in my heart of hearts I can’t keep him… Everything I really love is always being taken away from me.

Forty two days is just not enough time together, he knows it and she knows it. Lana understands that is all he can offer and she will take it. But Blake has other plans. Very dangerous plans that will hopefully allow them more time together but when Lana learns the true nature of his life, will she be able to handle it or will it go against everything she believes and have to turn her back on him?

“…you are my sustenance, my oxygen. I need you desperately. In fact, right now, what I feel for you is the only part of me that feels human.”

A few things I didn’t understand: One being- where was where Victoria was during this book. I mean she went to such great lengths to keep them apart at the end of book one and now she makes once uninteresting appearance. Blake never even talks about her and it is still assumed that he will marry her but it’s never talked about. I think her appearance could have added a lot of new drama and a more interesting twist to the storyline. One other thing that bothered me is that Blake is a highly powerful man, so when Lana left, it was hard for me to believe that he didn’t have the means or didn’t want to find her and demand answers.

Blake and Lana’s story continues in Besotted (The Billionaire Banker #3) due out at the end of April. Even though there is another book, I wouldn’t this book ends in a big cliffhanger. There is obviously more to the story but the ending won’t leave you frustrated with having to wait
