Synopsis

Ellis Hughes has loved the girl next door since he was ten-years-old. She was his sun, moon, and every visible star in a clear night sky. She was also his biggest regret.   When a terrible accident rips Ellis and Harlow apart, it shatters both their hearts beyond repair. More than a decade later, Ellis has paid his penance, but his regret still lingers, and the love he once harbored for his childhood sweetheart has never faded.   What Ellis believes has been destroyed forever, slowly comes back to life, only for a cruel twist of fate to intervene. Knowing he cannot live his life without Harlow in it, he faces the ultimate test of selflessness.   He must sacrifice his own heart to mend hers.

  My Review
4 "That Ending" Stars

A Life Less Beautiful was an emotional second chance story that I don't think I'll ever forget. Moving from past to present, Ellis and Harlow's story builds from the time they were children to them in their 30's reconnecting after 10 years apart. Ellis was sent to prison and it tore Harlow's families apart. As Ellis and Harlow find their feelings for each other never really wavered, reality isn't always as easy. And not only are their lives very different now but they are very different people. Yet an undeniable pull between them is still ever present if only they can get passed their heartbreaking ending 10 years ago.

This was my first book by Ms. Brooks and I have to say it pulled at every single emotion I had. From that stomach dropping prologue through their journey as best friends turned more, I fell for Ellis and Harlow. The romance was much more centered on the past as the present was more about them trying to overcome what tore them apart all those years ago. And just when Ellis and Harlow were finally finding their footing again, reality came swooping in and neither the characters nor *I* was the same. Because that ending. Just. Wow. I don't think that I will ever truly get over that. But as I took several days off from writing my review, I've come to process the ending as the way it was intended. That doesn't mean I still don't have BIG emotions in regards to it. The story as a whole had me in its palm and I won't forget it.

About the Author

I'm a little neurotic; I function on a tiny amount of sleep, and a huge amount of caffeine. I love old movies, green skittles, and have a slightly strange, and irrational fear of stormy weather.   When I'm not locked away scribbling down the crazy stories that occupy my mind, I can be found at home in East Yorkshire with my husband and two children.   I'm unashamedly fickle and can be persuaded to do just about anything with the promise of a good book, new shoes, or a bottle of bubbles.   Oh, and did I mention I also love to write?
