WHERE LIGHTNING STRIKES, a Bleeding Stars Stand-Alone Novel
Excerpt
Bright lights blinded from above and gleamed against the stark white floor. I hurtled down the narrow hall, desperate for escape. With every pounding step, I felt the separation grow. A chasm rending and ripping until I felt myself splitting in two. Gasping for breath, I stumbled out of the building and into the vacancy of the deep, deep night. Wind gusted, tumbling along the surface of the ground, a stir of agitation at my feet. Above, the storm raged. Clouds dark and heavy and ominous. Lightning struck. A crackle of energy shocked through the air. Wrapping me in coils of white-hot agony. For a moment, I gave into it and let myself feel. I lifted my face to the tormented sky, hands gripping my hair as I screamed. Screamed in anguish. Screamed in regret. Screamed loud enough I would never forget. A crack of thunder opened the sky. Rain poured. My hands fisted at my sides, and I buried the memory of the way he’d felt in my arms, the memory of his face, in the deepest part of me, sealed it off and cemented my heart. My spirit grasped and wove with the promise I had made him. I will never fall in love again. Not ever again. Not after tonight.
My Review
Perfection. I feel all light and airy and impassioned and emotional at the same time. A.L. Jackson just keeps getting better. Her writing is poetry in prose with a quiet intensity that grips you from the very first word and doesn't let up. Lyrik and Tamar's story is appropriately named as their journey is infused with sparks that burn between them until they were no longer able to be contained.
Tamar and Lyrik have known each other for some time since their best friends Shea and Sebastian are married and living their dreams together. Now that the band is back in Savannah after their tour, Tamar is determined to keep ignoring Lyrik and his (she tells herself) unwanted advances. She's doing everything in her power to never repeat her past mistakes and Lyrik's hostile beauty is a danger she doesn't need. She's running from a past she wants to forget but the perilous look in Lyrik's eyes calls to her even as she tries to deny it.
Lyrik purposefully lives up to the bad boy rock star image. He's got demons chasing him and he's dangerously close to succumbing to them. But there is something about Tamar that calls to him. He can get any girl he wants, usually two. But he finds himself chasing after Tamar even when one of his rules is that he doesn't care. He has his loyalty and that doesn't allow him to feel things especially about someone like Tamar who has the ability to rip him wide open.
As Tamar and Lyrik start to cross every line they've ever created, their passion burns brightly but so does regret, shame and bitterness. Two people so broken by their pasts that they can't see a future are combustable. But when their hearts ignite, nothing is left contain the flames.
Having adored Shea and Baz's story, I thought I knew Tamar and Lyrik but I was so wrong. There was so much more to these characters than I ever anticipated. My heart absolutely broke for the two of them both separately and together. As their pasts were slowly revealed I was honestly shocked by the turns their lives took. I have to admit I never in a million years would have guessed their secrets. A.L. Jackson did such a phenomenal job of opening up these characters that I felt everything they went through. I laughed with them. Swooned with them. Was angry with them. And loved with them. Even when my heart hurt, I trusted that Ms. Jackson wouldn't let me down and boy did she ever come through for me. The ending was beyond gorgeous.
I love the boys of Sunder. Both Baz and Lyrik's stories have gipped my heart and become two of my favorite rock star stories. I am absolutely giddy for more. After Baz's story I was desperate for Austin's story (which is next--yippee!) but now I am almost delirious with want for Ash and Zee's story. The beauty of Where Lightning Strikes has just proved, once again, why A.L. Jackson is one of my very favorite authors.
