Synopsis

Desperation makes a girl do crazy things…

When twenty-one year old Raina O’Connor is kicked out of her room on short notice, she’s thrown into a frantic search for a new place to stay. As the situation becomes more urgent, her choices have dwindled to her least favorite option—ladies’ man, Kent Nicholson.

Kent Nicholson loves women, just not as a roommate…

When a gorgeous blonde with big hazel eyes answers Kent’s ad for a roommate, his red flags start flying. He’s looking for a wingman, not a chick who will put a damper on his game or drench his apartment in pink. It’s clear she’s in a bind, and something about her makes him break his own rules. But when he reluctantly accepts, it’s with four concrete conditions.

Be his wingman. Don’t get in his way with other girls. No bitchy attitudes. And most importantly, she can’t fall for him.

Pretty sure this was the world’s worst idea—ever…

Trust is something earned. Raina learned that the hard way when her father broke her heart as a child, making it easy to steer clear of relationships. But living with Kent somehow stirs emotions Raina has always forbidden herself to have. Plus, he’s everything she never wanted—untrustworthy, pigheaded…and gorgeous. Something tells her Kent isn’t free of his own secret scars…

Love can drag you down and spit you out, and be worth every second.

My Review

What a whirlwind. I loved it! Shana Vanterpool's debut kept me glued to my Kindle all day long. I did not want to put it down. I needed to know what was going to happen. The obvious heartache and depression that Kent was going through and Raina's inner struggle to overcome her past and survive her attraction to Kent was emotionally taxing but in such a good way. The angst, the giggle-worthy moments, and even the codependence, made me love these characters beyond what I could have imagined.

My Sweet Demise finds Raina searching for a place to live. After spending all dyad finding nothing suitable, she's left with one option. Kent is looking for a wingman. He's looking for a guy to help him find his one night stands and not get in his way. What he gets is Raina. Kent offers Raina the room on condition: "Be his wingman. Don’t get in his way with other girls. No bitchy attitudes. And most importantly, she can’t fall for him." Desperate, Raina agrees and quickly realizes that maybe this is more than she bargained for and soon finds following the rules is impossible.

Kent is an unapologetic manwhore who is ruining himself slowly. Raina is basically the opposite of him in every way but finds herself, against her better judgement, falling for the bad boy. Knowing she shouldn't, she tries to get over her attraction but when his guard is down, Kent shows her that there is more behind his ladies' man exterior than anyone knows leaving it impossible for Raina to turn off her feelings for Kent. Certain heartbreak is at every corner, making both Raina and Kent want what they can't have.

This book made me feel. It made me laugh. It made me cringe. It made me want to yell. And it made me fall in love with the broken bad boy manwhore. Shana Vanterpool made me fall in love with a character than in most other circumstances, I would be rooting against. Kent was broken and he knew it and yet didn't do anything about it. Even when he didn't mean to, he started dragging Raina down with him. I went from wanting to bash him over the head to wanting to wrap him up and cuddle him until he felt better. I wanted to yell at him to just tell the truth but understood that he was struggling and didn't know how to move on. I, much like Raina, kept coming back of more even when he didn't deserve it.

Raina was also struggling. She had a horrible childhood and was doing everything she could to escape it even going to extremes. Meeting Kent was both her salvation and her downfall. Together these two were a codependent disaster that stuck to each other even when it broke not only their hearts but mine too.

But Shana wove a tale that made me love both of them despite their obvious issues. She created the perfect giggle worthy side kick, two people devoted to each other even before they even knew what that meant, and one of the best side characters I've ever read in James. With sexual tension for days, Raina and Kent were H.O.T together even as I'm scratching my head as to how in the world anything good can come of this relationship.

In the end my heart was torn open and filled to the brim. These two broken characters were mended together when all seemed impossible. Kent and Raina learned to love and let go giving themselves a true chance at happiness and giving me one of my favorite reading experiences of the year. I've found a new favorite book and an author I am exceedingly excited to read more from. Bravo Shana for surprising me in the best (even when my heart thought it was the worst) love story I couldn't even imagine.
